Cap Juluca Closes Out Season With Grand End-of-Season Gala And Staff Talent Show


Cap Juluca’s 2006/2007 staff appreciation closeout activities peaked on Friday, August 31st with the annual End of Season Gala and the staging of the Ms. Juluca Pageant and Talent Show. The night’s festivities got underway with a buffet dinner at PIMMS/Kemia for the Resort’s 400 member staff, friends and other invited guests and were capped by the annual pageant and talent show, which saw Cap Juluca Staff members displaying their many talents.

This year’s programme included five Ms. Juluca contestants representing Spa Services, Maintenance, Housekeeping, Design Room and Guest Services. At the end of the talent-packed evening, Cleone Romney, Ms. Juluca 2006/07 representing Guest Services walked away with the coveted title for another year.

The contestants, which included crowd favourites “Peaches” (Maldwyn ‘Chappel’ Romney), “Edisha” (Edgar Torres), as well as Maureen Mussington and Desiree Daniel, had the appreciative audience on their feet as they competed in four different segments: Introductory Speech, Beachwear, Talent and Evening Wear. Judges for the evening were Farrah Banks, Felicia Hennis and Muriel Owen, who rated the contestants on a number of criteria including content, delivery, appropriateness of attire, cohesion and flow and audience impact.

The three-hour Gala programme featured many prizes for staff and surprise performances which had the large crowd rolling in the aisles. Crowd-pleasing performances also came from staff members Priscilla Gumbs, Carmen Hackett-Saunders, Nino Buscit, Armando Araja and young rap artists Moreland Payne and Tristan Christopher who presented selections from their new CD. Highlights also included a popular “Juluca Rap” performed by the Maintenance Department, with a special appearance by dancer “Jamisha” (Jamal Hendricks) and a parade of fashion by Juluca staff models featuring clothing from Paradise Fashions of West End. The “Juluca Jumpers”, the first ever Cap Juluca Carnival Parade Troupe which captured the Anguilla Summer Festival Queen of the Band Trophy also took to the stage as part of the evening’s activities.

Presentations also came from the “Juluca Youth” (children of the resort’s staff) and included the Juluca Hula Hoop Dancers, the Juluca Fun Day Cheerleaders and a special appearance from the 2007 Prince and Princess Runners Up – Kevanee Lake and Jamal Carty, whose parents, Pearl Romney Lake and Miguelina Alcantara are employees of Cap Juluca.

During the evening which was chaired by Director of Human Resources, Dr. Phyllis Fleming-Banks, the 2007 Juluca Pride Hospitality Heroes, Altagracia Ramirez, Kishma Hodge, Victor Gumbs, Vincia Gumbs, Jamal Hendricks and Tristan Christopher were presented with their awards and cash prizes by General Manager, Hans Maissen, and the 2007 Hospitality Team of the Year (Guest Services) was also recognized. Also receiving special recognition, were Pageant and Carnival Troupe organizers, Condon Proctor and Pearl Romney-Lake. Mr. Maissen took the opportunity to again thank the staff for their outstanding contributions to the continued success of the resort and to wish them a relaxing and well-deserved vacation.

Cap Juluca closed its operations for the 2006/2007 season on Saturday, 1st September with a grand Beachnik, during which Staff and their families enjoyed an afternoon of dancing, boat trips, water sports and other activities. The award-winning property will reopen its doors for its 20th year of operations on Saturday, 27th October, under new ownership.
