Pottery Workshop For Children And Adults Successful

A three week pottery workshop is currently underway and has been coordinated by the National Council of Women and the Craft Shop. On Tuesday, July 24, The Anguillian made a visit to see the progress of the artists and was quite impressed.

Many pieces of pottery were being showcased and were still in the process of being formed. During the first week of the course, adults and children were exposed to the basics of pottery such as preparing the clay and slab construction. During the second week, the pottery was actually constructed and in the final week they will do repetition and finishing work.

The children who were invited were actually sponsored by local businesses. Mr. Robert Campbell was the lead instructor and mentioned how important indigenous crafts are to the tourist industry as visitors always want to take something that is hand made. The organizers were very grateful to Joyce Kentish & Associates, Caribbean Cable Communications, The Rotary Club of Anguilla and the Anguilla Social Security Board. They mentioned, “Without your financial assistance it would have been very difficult for us to manage. We are also very grateful to the Anguilla Development Board for making necessary arrangements for our professional facilitator in the person of Mr. Robert Campbell to conduct the classes. Mr. Campbell is no stranger to us and we are extremely grateful to have him work with us again.”

Mr. Campbell hopes that more people will get involved with pottery and dedicate more time to promoting this artistic craft in Anguilla. To view some of these pieces, people can simply go the Craft Shop near the library.
