Cable & Wireless (C&W) announced recently that while in the United States, its mobile customers can credit Caribbean bmobile prepaid accounts through any of the country’s 48,000 participating Western Union offices.

By simply providing to Western Union agents with the telephone number of the account to be credited, anyone can remotely top-up a prepaid bmobile account anywhere in the Caribbean. Each transaction costs US$5.
Previously, the company said, mobile customers travelling to the U.S.A. had to top-up their accounts before leaving home. This recent agreement means that travellers can refresh their balance from almost anywhere in the U.S.A., while, at the same time, enabling US-based friends and family to credit the pre-paid mobile accounts of loved- ones back home.
“We are always working to make using ‘bmobile’ more convenient,” said Chris Hetherington, CEO of Cable & Wireless Americas & Caribbean, referring to C&W’s mobile-network brand name.
“We know that travelling can be a time when you need your mobile most. Our goal is to make the ‘bmobile’ service work seamlessly wherever you are, and that starts with making it easy to put funds in your account. Now our customers have another great way to top-up whilst visiting the US.”
Western Union executive vice president and general manager for Payment Services Royal Cole echoed Hetherington, saying the new facility boosted customer service.
“A major facet of our strategy at Western Union is to enhance our consumers’ experience by providing convenience and choice,” he said. “By offering travellers and residents the option to top-up their own accounts and the accounts of others, this agreement accomplishes just that.”
Western Union and affiliates Orlandi Valuta and Vigo are providers of global money transfer services, providing fast, reliable and convenient ways to send money around the world, pay bills and purchase money orders through a network of approximately 300,000 locations in more than 200 countries and territories.
To top up a mobile phone account, a client must supply a Western Union agent with the phone number of the account to be topped up and payment in the amount desired. Once the transaction is complete, the mobile subscriber will receive a text message confirming that the payment - minus any home market taxes - has been applied.
Last year, C&W was the first company in the region to launch Roaming eTopUp across its entire Caribbean service area.
