Speaker: "Use House Of Assembly For More Debates"

Speaker of the Anguilla House of Assembly, David Carty, is urging all parliamentarians on the island to use the people’s parliament for more debates on matters affecting the island in order to find solutions and common ground for action.

He made the call on Tuesday this week while rounding off a very passionate debate on incidence of crime now negatively impacting Anguilla.

“It is my view that parliament serves three specific functions: one, to sustain the Government in power; two, to provide oversight on that Government and to keep it on its toes; and three, to express and articulate the first desire or the will of the people of Anguilla in open debate,” he continued.

“Since my election to this office, I have urged members privately and publicly to use this Chamber for more than just the passage of legislation. As important as the legislation that we have passed is, and as important as the legislation we will now deal with is, to the people of Anguilla, there are social issues before us, because of the metamorphosis which our island is undergoing, that need to be addressed.

“I urge members to take this opportunity to use the functions of this Assembly and institution more [effectively]. I have no compunction in saying that this is one of the most effective debates that I have listened to since my election to this office and whether any one inside or outside of this Chamber agrees or disagrees with what has been said today , I know in my heart that members have spoken from their hearts as Anguillians. I think that is very important and should be encouraged.”
