Speaking to The Anguillian, Mrs. Edwards explained that the science project involved work that the children had been doing in the classroom and based on the science curriculum. “Each project was selected based on topics I have taught in the classroom and they decided on which topic they wanted to do,” she went on. “They were placed in three groups but worked together as one group on their science projects.”

The Teacher said some of the projects included the classification of animals, building aquariums and setting up different environments to promote growth. Other experiments involved flowers, electricity, water and the testing the strength of paper tissues. In all there were seven science projects.

Asked about the aims of the science project, Mrs. Edwards replied: “Firstly, it gives the children a better understanding of what it takes to work cooperatively as a group; secondly, a better knowledge of science; how to gather their data, put it in charts and graphs and how to experiment. Many skills are learnt while doing a science fair because it is not only just getting the finished product; it is also collecting the data, recording it and making sure that their experiments are completed.”
Questioned about her role, the quick-thinking teacher responded: “I am more or less the facilitator because it would not be a successful science fair if I did not have the students to work with. So they are my tools and I am just facilitating and bringing out the knowledge from them.”
