GOLF CLASSIC TO BENEFIT HEALTH AUTHORITY Gemstar Group Sponsors Charity 'Tourney' |

The first ever Anguilla Golf Classic, benefiting the Health Authority of Anguilla (HAA), which was launched on March 28, 2007, has confirmed a new sponsor – GemStar Group Anguilla.

Ray Lawrence, an official of the company, handed over a cheque for US$10,000 to Dexter James, Chief Executive Officer of the Health Authority on Monday, May 7. at a press briefing at the HAA’s Corporate Office.
GemStar is sponsoring a “Hole in One” for the Anguilla Golf Classic scheduled for August 17 and 18 at the Temenos St. Regis Resort Golf Course. The competition will feature for chances to win a $250,000 prize for any player who makes a hole in one or any of the par 3’s. Golfers will have an opportunity to take a swing at winning a totalof US$1 million.
To date, sponsors have contributed US$41,500 towards the targeted goal of US$150,000 for the fund-raising event. Cap Juluca Hotel, Flag/St. Regis Residences and Gemcom have come on board at the ‘gold’ level as well as GemStar Group mentioned above for US$10,000 each. FEDEX and the Anguilla Golf Association are supporting the charity tournament as “Friends of Anguilla Golf Classic. Carretta USA has donated 150 Cap Juluca caps for golfers and volunteers. ANGLEC also agreed to sponsorship at the launch on March 28.
Monies raised from sponsorships, donations and registrations for the Anguilla Golf Classic will be used for urgent capital funding projects for the Health Authority. According to Mr. James, the main two projects are the equipping of the much-needed Intensive Care Unit and a second Operating Theatre at the Princess Alexandra Hospital. These facilities will greatly assist in strengthening the capacity of the health system to manage patients suffering from trauma as well as its capacity to respond to disasters such as a mass casualty.
During the press briefing, Kay Ferguson, Executive Secretary at the HAA Corporate Office, and one of the Anguilla Golf Classic tournament organisers, outlined the importance of the fund-raiser.
She thanked GemStar Group Anguilla for sponsoring the “Hole in One” at the competition and encouraged other local businesses to join as sponsors or to donate at whatever level they could afford. Ms Ferguson emphasised the need for securing all of the sponsorships so that the tournament could be as successful as the Central Christian School Golf Tournament held on April 21.
Ricardo Perez, Chief Financial Officer for Cap Juluca, who is also a committee member, outlined the remaining sponsorship opportunities. The tournament has sponsorships available at the following levels: ‘Platinum’ US$30,000; ‘Hole in One’ at US$10,000; tee box or green at US$3,000; tea box or green at US$1,000; ‘Friends of Anguilla Golf Classic’ at US$250; and donations.
The Anguillian business and community, both small and large, are being invited and encouraged to be part of this charitable fund-raiser which benefit the health care system of Anguilla. For as little as US$250, anyone can become a ‘Friend of the Anguilla Golf Classic’ sponsor and help raise funds for improvements to the health care system.
