Dear Editor,

Last month, three flowering ixora shrubs were uprooted and stolen from a garden in St. Mary’s churchyard.

With permission from the Bishop, a group of us had worked long and hard for the past fifteen months to tidy and beautify our churchyard. The work consisted of: several 6 a.m. meetings to dig holes, constant carrying of water to the yard to water the growing plants and spraying and removing worms and flies from the leaves.
Persons (many of them elderly) had donated money and much time to our efforts. All in all this was nothing trivial or haphazard. People greatly appreciate the beauty of the gardens.

I want the perpetrators to realize what they have done. The churchyard is sacred ground and those plants belonged to the Church. If anyone feels compelled to remove items from the church yard they should remove the litter!

Yours sincerely,

Leonie A. Gumbs
