Drug Trafficking: Man Gets Jail Term, Fined Ten Grand

Elsia Sasso, aged 48, of Rey Hill, was convicted in the Magistrate’s Court for the possession of 3.81 kilos of compressed bush cannabis with intent to supply.

A police press release on Wednesday stated that the drug consignment had a street value of $150,000 US and that after considering the facts of the case, Magistrate Courtney Abel sentenced Sasso to four months imprisonment and fined him $10,000 East Caribbean dollars.

On 21st August 2006, Sasso was spotted driving a vehicle in Rey Hill by members of the Drugs and Firearms Task Force and on seeing the officers he sped off. During the pursuit that followed Sasso collided with a passing motorist and was seen to throw a large bag out of the rear side driver’s window. The bag was recovered and found to contain the cannabis and Sasso was stopped and arrested nearby.

Detective Inspector Paul Sinclair of the Drugs and Firearms Task Force said: “This case underlines the need for constant vigilance by the Royal Anguilla Police Force, other agencies involved in law enforcement and the community at large.

“In order to effectively combat drug importation and trafficking we need help and the cooperation of those holding key information regarding such illegal activity.

“I would urge anyone with information rewarding drugs or any other crime in Anguilla to contact the Police without hesitation.”
