Easter Monday: HUNDREDS CONVERGE ON MEADS BAY, RUTHWILL GROUNDS |
| Publishing date: 16.04.2007 08:49 |
The Easter Monday holiday was a grand and delightful occasion for hundreds of people in Anguilla. They converged on Meads Bay, where the first boat race of the season made its way to Sandy Hill and back, and on the grounds of the Scouts and Guides Ruthwill Auditorium where the Anglican Church held its annual fair.

Celebrating the victory of De Tree
|
The crowds braved the scotching heat and many at Meads Bay found much relief as they cooled off in the placid water. At both events there were large quantities of food and other refreshment. The spectators enjoyed themselves as they awaited the return of the racing boats or the start of the cricket match between the Anglicans and Methodists, the hat competition and a fashion show.

The winning trophies
|
The boat race was sponsored by Digicel and Coors and a number of trophies were on hand for the winning boats.

The victorious De Tree
|
The racing craft returned to Meads Bay well after four o’clock. In first place was De Tree, the community-owned boat at Blowing Point, a feat which resulted in much delight for residents who flocked the beach carrying branches of trees. Second place was taken by Superstar; Light & Peace was third; and in fourth place was NWO, the much-talked about boat from West End. There were about a dozen boats in the race, followed by other boats and supporting groups.

Participants in St. Mary’s hat competition
|
The St. Mary’s Fair provided some additional entertainment for the boat racing fans who arrived in time at the grounds of the Ruthwill Auditorium for some of the activities. One of them, the hat competition involved members from the both the Anglican and Methodist Churches.

The competition included the most creative hat for children and for adults the largest, funniest and most colourful hat. There were many attractive designs paraded by the competitors.
