Impressive Parade Of Athletes

Spectators marvelled at the impressive and colourful parade of athletes as they wended their way to the James Ronald Webster Park on Tuesday, March 3, for the Cable and Wireless sponsored Inter-House Athletic Competition of the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School.

The 11 a.m. parade commenced on the grounds of Campus A for the journey to the park displaying the banners and colours of the five houses. The enthusiastic athletes were followed by lines of spectators. Travelling with them were drummers from the Pathfinders, Scouts and the School’s Band, adding much to the lustre, pomp and ceremony of the occasion.

The athletes were well received at the pavilion by scores of parents and other members of the public including government officials.
Marketing Manager for Cable and Wireless, Giesel Francis, speaking to the mass gathering, encouraged the athletes to be vigilant, patient and good sports persons, stressing that their opponents on that day would be their friends the next day. She was delighted that Cable and Wireless was continuing to be the overall sponsor of the competition as its contribution to the social development of the young people of Anguilla.

The Sports Day competition was declared open by Principle of the School, Ingrid Lake. She expressed the hope that members of the public would enjoy seeing the competing children in action. “So far, we hear about the negative behaviour of our young people, but when they are here to show the positive side, too often we do not have the time to support them then,” she stated.

Mrs. Lake was right because the performance of the athletes and the cheer leaders was something to admire and to be proud about. It was, as one onlooker put it, “a moment of glory for the school.”
The Principal spoke about the benefits of sports to the social development of the students and the opportunities than could come to them.

The Sports Day activities at the Webster Park on Tuesday and Wednesday were preceded by a road race sponsored by NAGICO and a cycle race, both of which started on the Long Path and ended at the Park.
