The Anguilla Government has announced that with effect from this month (February), it will be sharing decisions taken by Executive Council with the people of the island.
|
A release to this effect, with a number of such decisions, was issued on Monday this week. It stated that the Government was acting in accordance with its commitment to openness, transparency, good governance and accountability. The decisions, published below, were taken at the Executive Council’s meeting in January 31, 2007.
DEVELOPING A LONG-TERM ENERGY INDEPENDENCE STRATEGY AND PLAN FOR ANGUILLA
Council agreed that a seven-member committee should be established for two years in the
first instance with the mandate of overseeing, investigating, planning and recommending a long-term vision for an energy independence plan for Anguilla. This is an effort to make energy more affordable; and secondly, to organise an international meeting to be hosted in Anguilla in the fourth quarter of 2007 on Climate Change and Carbon Trading under the Kyotyo Protocol.
The Committee comprises: Marcel Fahie, Policy Adviser in the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development, Industry, Commerce and Tourism; Karim Hodge, Director of Environment; Larry Franklin, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Infrastructure; David Carty, member; Peter Reynolds, Architectural Design; and two representatives from the Anguilla Hotel and Tourism Association and ANGLEC Board to be named later.
DEVELOPMENT OF A PAROLE BOARD
Council agreed that the Bill for a Parole of Prisoners Act, 2007, should be gazetted subject to any changes by the Attorney General’s Chambers.
SECURITY AREA AROUND THE PRISON
Council agreed that the land adjacent to the main road and the prison, which is presently owned by the National Bank of Anguilla, should be exchanged with Government to be utilised as a security area.
FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTION TO DOROTHY F. CARTY & VERA HARRIGAN
Council agreed that a contribution be awarded to Ms Dorothy Carty to assist with the repair of her home which was damaged by fire and a further contribution be awarded to Vera Harrigan to assist with the replacement of her possessions and those of her children which were destroyed by fire.
OVERDRAFT FACILITY 2007
Council recommended the increase of the overdraft facility to EC$10 million to be approved by the House of Assembly on February 13, 2007.
Editorial Comment
This is a most welcome gesture by Government to keep the people of Anguilla well- informed on all important matters as much as possible. It is hoped that this will continue regularly.
