Meeting with Education Officials
|
The President of the College, Dr. John Light, was in Anguilla late last week to discuss future relationships with his institution following the award of scholarships to eight Anguillians which are to be taken up later this year and early next year.
He met with Governor Andrew George, Chief Minister, Osbourne Fleming, Minister of Education, Evans Rogers, his Permanent Secretary, Rodney Rey; Project Director of the National Community College Development Unit, Dawn Reid, members of the Project Steering Group and the eight scholarship recipients.
The scholarship awardees were among a number of students who participated in the first phase of the short term interim hospitality training programme which was conducted in Anguilla during the period October to December 2006. Six of the students won scholarships as a result of their top performance in a final seminar on “Pathways to Legendary Customer Care” conducted by Dr. Ben Henry of the Customer Service Academy of Jamaica. Two students won their scholarships for their positive attitude.

The eight students who earned scholarships are Desserie Brooks, Cleonette Lake, Zwinya Connor, Kishna Thompson, Gerder Connor, Shannelle Hodge, Bernel Richardson and Ashley Richardson. The scholarships are worth US$30,000 each over a two-year period and cover tuition and accommodation.
While these students are preparing to take up their scholarships in the United States, some 110 new students have enrolled for the six short-term courses focusing on hospitality training which are currently being offered by the Community College Development Unit, while the National Community College is being established.
The courses are being conducted by local tutors. The course work, certified by the Barbados Community College, began on January 22 and will continue until May 4, 2007.
