Listening To The People |
| Publishing date: 02.02.2007 09:57 |
Last week was not a good public relations time for the Government. It was occasioned by its failure to inform the people about what the leaders thought were “consequential”, “innocuous” and “urgent” amendments which they requested the Secretary of State to make to the Anguilla Constitution.
|
Just as quickly as public resentment flared up, so quickly too did the Government of Chief Minister, Osbourne Fleming, reversed its decision. The result has been a relaxation of moods on both sides and commendation for the Government, particularly Mr. Fleming, for listening to the voice of the people. This incident is likely to serve as a good indicator to the Government that it is accountable to the people for its actions and that transparency and accountability are words which must not be forgotten in the vocabulary of our political leaders.
Over the years the Government has occasionally discovered that there are capable and well-qualified Anguillians among the citizenry who can provide exceptionally good advice which is available just for the asking and without price. This has now been seen again when the Government turned to local eminent constitutional lawyer, Dame Bernice Lake, QC (and others not mentioned) for assistance. This acknowledged help has obviously been well received by the people and has in fact saved the day, assuring a right approach to the situation and a return of calm on the island
What is now really required is for the Government to get on with the report by the Constitutional Reform Commission and to ensure that as many of the recommendations as possible are approved in London. The review of the Constitution has been a protracted and expensive exercise. It is now time for the new Constitution to emerge to the relief and satisfaction of all in Anguilla.
