They lost their two-bedroom apartment in Deep Waters and all their belongings following a fire in the kitchen believed to have been caused by a faulty gas line.
Miss Harrigan sustained burns on her face, arms and legs. Some blotches on her face have since receded and it was with a big smile that she received the donations from the Adventist Church personnel on Sunday, January 28.
She was presented with a cheque for EC$6,000 and two bags of clothing and foodstuff by Christine Waite of the Community Services Department of Jireh Tabernacle of Seventh-day Adventists at South Hill.
There were a number of other persons at the short presentation ceremony at Shoal Bay, where the fire victims have taken up temporary residence with relatives. They were First Elder at the Mount Fortune Church, Todville Harrigan; Lay Activities Leader, Clive Smith; James Willock at Jireh Tabernacle along with Marjorie Horsford of the Community Services Department there and Lynnette Romney of Sheimi Tabernacle at Long Bay. Member of the family were also present.
Elder Todville Harrigan said the assistance given to the family was part of the church’s outreach programme. The money was a portion of funds collected each year during the SDA’s harvest ingathering campaign.
“We are our brother’s keeper. We share the pain and sorrow of the family and wish to help them,” he stated on behalf of Pastor Danny Phillip and the three SDA congregations.
The donations are to meet the immediate needs of the family who will be grateful for further assistance from other sources.
