AARF On Membership Drive

The Anguilla Animal Rescue Foundation (AARF) is on a membership drive to increase its effectiveness on the island. On Monday this week, Gayle Gurvey and Helen Richardson mounted a booth in the lobby of the General Post Office aimed at signing up new members and getting existing members to pay their dues. They also sold specially-printed AARF t-shirts.

The next event will be a garage sale at the Agricultural Department on March 17.

AARF is an all-volunteer service organisation founded in 2000 by a number of residents interested in the welfare of animals. Its main focus is a spay/neuter project that focuses on dogs and cats.

The organisation states in its brochure that “the uncontrolled breeding of dogs and cats due to lack of spaying and neutering has caused a population explosion” on the island. It added: “Many times unwanted animals are left to fend for themselves in the bush and return to a wild state of behaviour. Livestock, in particular those that are tethered, become prey to wild dogs seeking food for survival not only for themselves, but many times for another litter of homeless unwanted puppies.”
