Anguilla's Race Against AIDS Well Supported


This year’s fourth Optimist Club Race Against AIDS in Anguilla was again another success, attracting runners and walkers from such places as Anguilla, Antigua, St. Martin, Matinique, Sweden and the United States.



In the male segment of the half marathon, an early event, the winner was Saud Gomez, a Mexican national residing and working in Anguilla. Second place was taken by Jermaine Bran of Antigua and in third place was St. Maartener Sam Basitir.

In the female division, the winner was Latoya Joseph of Antigua. Terry Dewitt of St. Maarten placed second and Claudine Patini of Martinique took third place.


In the overall half marathon, the first place winners received US$1,000; those in second place got US$500 and the winners in third place received US250.

In the 10km race for participants 18 years and under, the male winner was Justin Smith of Antigua. His compatriot, Tamilla Butler, was the female winner.


The winning male in the 19-35 years division was Nasheine Johnson of Anguilla and in the 36 years and over section, the winner was Dale Jones of Antigua. Lizzie Searing of USA was the winning female. They all received trophies.

The 5k race saw a number of children among the participants. The Anguillian winners in the 6-9 years category included Raymond Adams, Jamique Fleming, Leslie Lake, Carlton Gumbs and Nicole Gumbs and Jaymese Othello. The winners in the 19-35 category, the winners were Gregory Busch and Alikson Zeagman of Anguilla and in the 36 and over category, the winners were Eric Dott and Deborah Delma of the USA. All of them received medals from Optimist District Governor, Sonia Anderson.

Following the presentations Ms Anderson praised the Anguilla Optimist Club for being in the forefront in the fight against AIDS and hoped that other such clubs in the region would do likewise.

Chairperson of the Optimist Race Against AIDS Committee, Charmaine Sasso, was particularly grateful to the sponsors and the participants for their continuing support and involvement. AIDS activist, John Lake, of the National AIDS Committee, thanked the Optimists for organising the race and all those who participated in the event.
