Cable & Wireless Donates To Stingray Music Programme

On Friday 20 October 2006 Cable & Wireless officially handed over 2 Personal Internet Communicators (PICs) to coordinator, Ms Ijahnya Christian, volunteer teachers and students of The Stingray Music Programme. The PICS and internet service were installed at the Athlyi Rogers Study Centre in The Valley, which administers and manages this educational initiative.

At the handing over ceremony, Ms Christian stated that C&W was very responsive to her request and in fact because of their willingness to support the Stingray Music Programme and its work, the donation of the PICS and internet connectivity has resulted in the IT part of the programme being two months ahead of schedule.

The volunteers, Mr Clinton Richardson of North Hill and Mr Wilmoth Connor, Manager of the Musical Brothers from South Hill both expressed their thanks and appreciation to Cable & Wireless for its continued commitment and support to the youth and people of Anguilla. Ms Jaymese Othello, one of the students benefiting from the programme, took the opportunity to convey her thanks to Cable & Wireless and to the Sting Ray Music Programme for the opportunities that have been afforded to her because of this initiative and words of gratitude were expressed by Mr Charles Gerald, President, Ms Joan Richardson Secretary and Ms Gina Brooks Hodge a volunteer of the Triple Crown Culture Yard which is one of the partner agencies of the Stingray Music Programme, the other being Bankie Banks/Rodney House.

Mr Sutcliffe Hodge, Chief Executive of Cable & Wireless commented that it very easy to decide to make the donation of the PICs to the Stingray Music Programme after receiving Ms Christian’s letter of request and her invitation to visit the Study Centre. Upon visiting the Centre he was impressed and moved by what the Stingray Music Programme is trying to achieve and immediately committed C&W’s support and assistance.

Mr Hodge said ‘I wish to compliment Ms Christian and the other persons involved in the programme on their efforts and I hope that C&W’s donation will further compliment the work of programme’.

The communications facilities which were donated will allow supervised Internet research for the 31 children and youth from 12 communities who are currently registered in the programme and will initiate the establishment of a community Internet Café recommended at a Valley youth meeting held in September 2005. Three young persons from the community have been identified for training in managing the centre and a number of others are being trained as mentors.
