Government Sponsored Bus System |

Re: Government Sponsored Bus System
Honourable Chief Minister,
We, supported by signatures below, would like to propose that you seriously consider a government bus system which we feel is, and has been, in great need for many, many years.
|
As you know, many of us do not drive and do not have the luxury of having our own cars, yet we are offered jobs throughout the island. Many times we cannot accept these jobs because we know that there is no way to reliably show up for work on time. If we do accept the job our choice is to hope for a lift from someone passing or to pay someone privately to carry us where we need to go. Many times it is not possible to get a lift as people are not stopping as they did in prior days. If we pay someone to carry us, often the charge for a ride is 1/3 of what we can expect to earn in that day of work.
It is difficult and getting more difficult for the average person to take advantage of the work opportunities on the island.
We believe that if the government had in its budget to purchase three vans to use as buses and then hired three full-time drivers to loop around the island east to west, it would be a much utilized programme and very much appreciated by your public. Nobody wants to start a private bus company as the amount that would need to be charged per rider to be make it very profitable would also make it unrealistic for the public. If the government sponsored the program, as they do in most countries around the world, it could charge a smaller amount, say US$2.00, per person. Most likely it would not cost the government any money to operate. The income from the rider’s fare would pay for the driver and gas.
We beg you to consider this proposal to help all of us and the general public. In addition, this program would reduce the need for each individual to own his or her own vehicle causing traffic congestion, would keep kids and mothers from having to walk long distances on the side of the road and would assist employers in having more employees available to them and able to report to work on time.
We thank you for your consideration and hope to see this proposal come to life.
Sincerely,
Your appreciative public
