PORT DEVELOPMENT MOVES TO BLOWING POINT Three Piers For passenger Terminal |
| Publishing date: 29.09.2006 12:14 |
With construction work around the main jetty at Road Bay, Sandy Ground, now well in hand, the Anguilla Port Development Project has moved to Blowing Point where an all inclusive passenger terminal is to be built.

Beginnings of the new pier at Blowing Point
|
The work at Road Bay includes the construction of a brand new pier alongside the existing main jetty. This specially-designed pier will accommodate the small cargo vessels which now ply between Anguilla and St. Martin/St. Maarten and which currently offload their cargoes at Blowing Point.
The next phase of work at Road Bay is the refurbishing of the main jetty which has shown serious deterioration of the supporting piles and other areas of its superstructure.

The Blowing Point phase of the Port Development Project calls for the provision of a new pier, now under construction to the east of the existing two piers, and the demolition and rebuilding of these two piers. There has been a revision of the scope of work at Blowing Point which has been increased. No final cost has been calculated but for now the figure is in the area of 2.5 million US dollars.

Once the piers are completed the Blowing Point Port, which has already undergone some important improvements, will be strictly operated as a passenger terminal. One can expect to see other innovations and facilities there which are normally found at ports being operated in line with the demands of the travel industry. There will be opportunities for example for such private-sector enterprises as shops and boutiques and other ancillary services.
It is also expected that proper parking areas will be designed to take care of the present situation where there is random parking of vehicles on privately-owned land.

The port work now in hand is being carried out by Eghill & Associates of Barbados.
Under the Port Development Project is a later plan for the provision of a new cargo port at Corito on the southern coast of the island. Scenic Road Bay will then be used as an area for tourism-related activities, an anchorage for pleasure boats and will remain one of the prime boat-racing sites in Anguilla.
