Dear Sir,
RECYCLING A MUST
Soroptimist members would like, through the courtesy of your newspaper, to express our disappointment at the discontinuation of the glass re-cycling programme. Recycling is such an important part of the general development of any country that this apparent “backward step” is one that should not go without comment or further investigation as to the possibilities of continuing it.
|
We understand that resources are one of the main reasons and should like to encourage the private sector to get involved in assisting with the collection and transportation of the glass for recycling. Apart from the need to recycle products in this day and age, the increase in garbage must be quite significant with the addition of all the glass bottles, and should be a reason in itself for continuing the recycling of this and other materials.
As a group, the Soroptimist Club for many months saved aluminum cans and encouraged others to do so as this was to be the next item for re-cycling. Unfortunately, this did not prove feasible although they may be an easier item to recycle as the weight and volume would be considerably less. However it should be in addition to the recycling of glass and not an alternative.
We urge the Government and businesses on the island to investigate the possibilities for the continuation of recycling glass and the recycling of other items on the island.
Members of the Soroptimist Club of Anguilla.
