Youth seems to be a timely subject these days. It is being mentioned on the various radio stations and talk shows, on web pages and talk forums related to Anguilla, as well as the local newspapers. Consequently, the media blitz on youth topics has prompted many people and organizations to start, maintain or upgrade youth initiatives.

There are far too many clubs, people, and organizations to mention under one article (although it will be my attempt to give the aforementioned their due recognition throughout the year). This particular edition of Celebration of Youth is one of encouragement as it is my hope that parents, businesses and children take advantage of the many opportunities that are available now.

To the parents, I must stress that your children are constantly yearning for meaningful activities and attention. It is important that parents introduce their children to many different activities so that they might become more well-rounded as human beings at a young age. As a child gets older, in my opinion, it is then time for them to choose either one specific sport or activity in which they excel. Upon choosing their respective activity, it is up to the parents to make sure that they support their child not only financially but by visibly being present at their competitions or events. It is much better to be the best at something than just be mediocre at everything else and to be the best, the parent must be active.

To the businesses, I continue to challenge them with supporting meaningful programs. I have been impressed with Anguilla’s businesses on a whole as they are very generous. Yet, it is obvious that Government is not able to do much financially as public facilities are visibly sub-standard and not maintained. At the moment, it appears that Government is placing its interests in other needed areas such as infrastructure and beautification. We must all agree that these two areas are of importance as the roads are quite bad, especially in the east. It is therefore even more imperative that businesses continue to provide as much support as they can. They must keep in mind that children will one day be their employees and patrons.

To the children, take advantage of all the opportunities you have to better yourself. Do not settle for liming, watching television, or hanging out at the Chinese when you can be engaged in activities such as cricket, tennis, football, golf, sailing, exercise classes, working out at a gym, community projects, youth clubs, church activities etc… Many or even all organizations can help you achieve greatness. I am also sure that they also offer scholarships for those of you who think you cannot afford to “play.” All human beings must be accountable and responsible for their actions and it is now time that youth take responsibility for missed opportunities. Therefore, take advantage and do not miss out or you will be left behind.
