They are among a number of other youth, 13 and under, from the Leeward and Windward Islands taking part in the regional tournament. There have also been invitations to Barbados.
Anguilla’s Cricket Development Officer, Cardigan Connor, who is one of the officials accompanying the island’s fifteen players, said the tournament had been in progress for some nine years and hosted over that period by the Ministry of Sport in St. Kitts. Anguilla has taken part in the matches for the past seven years. A number of Anguilla’s cricketers playing in the under 19 matches in Guyana – have all participated in the tournament.
“So it is the first stage of representation at this level,” Connor told The Anguillian shortly before the team’s departure at Wallblake Airport. The cricketers have been drawn from all the primary schools as well as Campus B.
“We have a very young team,” Connor went on. “At this stage I am not looking to win, but what will be nice is the experience that they will gain.” The captain of the team is Shakeem Saunders.
The tournament will run for 10-11 days. The Anguillian team received support from Scotiabank, which sponsored the touring kits and the playing kits, and from some of Connor’s friends from the United States and Europe and from the Ministry of Sport.
In addition to Cardigan Connor, the team is accompanied by John Jeffers, Alkins Rogers and John Martin.
