Reid Looking For High Level Support

The Hon. Stanley Everton Reid, the first Anguillian Deputy Governor, says he is looking forward to receiving a high level of support from the various sectors of the society as he embarks on his “new voyage of service to the people of Anguilla.”
He made the statement on Tuesday, July 10, shortly after been sworn in by Governor Andrew George at the Governor’s Office at Old Ta.

Mr. Reid said it was truly a historic occasion and that he felt quite honoured “to have been selected as Anguilla’s first Anguillian Deputy Governor.”

The rest of his address was as follows:

“Many Anguillians have expressed pride in the fact that I have been selected as the first local Deputy Governor. I think Anguillians generally have grown in stature not because I have been appointed but because an Anguillian has been appointed as Deputy Governor. This sense of pride I hope will manifest itself in the way Anguillians and non-Anguillians alike continue to relate to the office of Deputy Governor and the holder of the office.

“I have no disillusions about the role I am required to play in the administration of Government in Anguilla. I will be required to address my mind to difficult issues for more often than I have had to do before. I like to believe that my former positions in the Public Service, and the manner in which I functioned in those positions, have prepared me to function effectively in the role of Deputy Governor.

“In making decisions as Crown Counsel/Senior Crown Counsel and as Permanent Secretary, Public Administration, I was always mindful to ensure that any decisions made were not for my personal benefit or the benefit of a chosen few persons, but that such decisions were for the benefit of Anguillians generally. I see no reason to change this manner of thinking in my new post as Deputy Governor. I will therefore attend to my duties in a manner which is intended to reap benefits for Anguillians generally.

“The success of my tenure as Deputy Governor will be assured if I receive the support of Ministers of Government, public servants at all levels and most importantly, the support of the Anguilla populace generally.”

In swearing in Mr. Reid, Governor Andrew George said the appointee’s father, Eric Reid, Senior Adviser in the Chief Minister’s Office, had the opportunity to see his son sworn in as the first Anguillian Deputy Governor. He stated that it was an important step forward for the island and that he was assured that he would do an excellent job and be a worthy representative of the island.

Acting Chief Minister, Victor Banks, repeated earlier statements in the House of Assembly, commending Mr. Reid on his appointment. He said Reid was fit for the task and had represented himself well in other capacities of service. He stated that his parents should be happy that their son had lived up to their high expectations. The Minister was also happy that Reid’s wife, Education Planner, Dawn Reid, was a top public servant making decisions and her own contribution to Anguilla.
