Stingray Music Vacation Programme Kicks Off

The Valley, Anguilla -The Anguilla Stingray Music Programme is offering a new outlet for creative expression to Anguilla’s children and youth for the long summer vacation. The programme began on Monday 10th with a Guitar Screening Workshop at the Athlyi Rogers Study Centre located at Triple Crown Culture Yard in The Valley.

Tutoring the guitar workshop is one of Anguilla’s veteran musicians, Mr. Wilmoth (Father) Connor of South Hill, a pioneer in the history of string band and steel band in Anguilla and manager of the Musical Brothers Band. Mr. Connor is being assisted by volunteer Ms. Joanna Burt-Kinderman who plays the rhythm guitar.

The object of the week-long exercise is to introduce participants to the elements of guitar playing such as timing, fingering, keys, scales and chords. Care and maintenance of the guitar will also be taught and student aptitudes will be determined so that ongoing classes can be arranged beyond the vacation period. On Saturday 15th July from 5.00 p.m. a number of Anguilla’s leading string band players will interact with the workshop participants to expose them to the different stringed instruments found in string bands to encourage young persons to keep this art form alive.

Guitars for the programme were contributed by Bankie Banx and the support for the workshop was obtained from the Government of Anguilla through the Youth and Culture Division in the Department of Sports, Youth and Culture.
Workshops in drumming, drum making and creative dance have been scheduled for the month of August.
Further information about the programme may be obtained from Triple Crown Culture Yard at telephone number 497-2878 or email address triplecrown@anguillanet.com
