Minister of Education the Hon Evans McNeil Rogers spoke of the milestone the students have reached, congratulated them on behalf of the Government and people and told them he was proud of their achievements so far. He reminded them that the sixth form was only the beginning and of the need to further their education at home or abroad. He said that the Government was committed to human resource development and that training at home or abroad was available. He urged them to stand out as leaders wherever they go and to be well qualified as the future of Anguilla was in their hands.
Mitchelle Lake introduced the keynote speaker, Carlyle Rogers, who is a former student and teacher of the school who just gained a law degree and is the Deputy Director of the Financial Services Commission. Rogers told the students that they were the first generation born and raised in a consumer society and urged them to think carefully and read widely. He described the options of staying in Anguilla, studying in the Caribbean, Europe or the USA and the different cultures they would meet. He suggested that wherever they go they would be impacted by China and India as the twenty first century is predicted to be led by these countries and there will be an increase in global competition. He closed by congratulating the students and wishing them every success.
Certificates were presented to all the students by Principal Darwin Hazell assisted by Josette Hodge. Subject awards were given to students in the form of plaques that had been sponsored by different businesses on the island. Monifa Fahie gained awards in five subjects (communication studies, mathematics, biology, chemistry and English) with other subject awards going to Kenniva Brooks (Caribbean Studies), Careme Carty (Accounting), Jobern Gumbs (Geography), Khondah Hazell (Management of Business), Timarah Hodge (Food Science), Nashaine Johnson (Computer Science), Georgia Matthew (Sociology) and Arniva Richardson (Economics).
Deputy Principal Ingrid Lake commended the students whom she said demonstrated perseverance and determination. She urged them to manage their time constructively, to accent the positive, to focus on possibilities not problems, make the best of every moment and face life with an attitude of gratitude. Omar Evan sang “I Believe I can Fly” to the graduates and Nekyra Rogers, one of the graduates, gave the vote of thanks.
