AFFL Round-Up: Shining Stars Repeat As League Champions


The Shining Stars FC successfully defended their title in 2006 to again claim the Chairman’s Cup. It cam down to the final game of the League and the goal difference to determine the Caribbean Commercial Bank sponsored female football champions for this year. Shining Stars FC narrowly edged out their closest rivals Gazelles FC by having a superior goal difference (12 to 10). Both teams entered the final game day level on points with last year’s champions having a slightly better record of a one goal differential.

On Sunday, June 4th, before a large crowd Shining Stars FC crushed the SuperStars FC by a score of 3 goals to nil. Midfielder Clardeena Richardson netted twice for the eventual winners with the other goal coming from striker Captain Jaynelle Lake. Defender for the Shining Stars FC, Isabel, was adjudged Player of the Game.

In the final match of the 2006 League Championship encounter, the Gazelles FC needed to score a by a winning margin of four goals to upset the apple cart and capture their first title. They fought valiantly but could only manage a 2 goal victory margin over the third placed Lil Soldiers FC in a very exciting and entertaining match. Goals from Judiann and Krystie sealed victory but it was not enough for them to gain the championship honours. Krystie Webster was adjudged the Player of the Game for her outstanding work in attack for the Gazelles FC.

In earlier matches during the week in review, Lil Soldiers FC edged out the SuperStars FC by a score of 2 goals to 1 on Wednesday May 31st. Shelissa netted both goals for Lil Soldiers while Monique Carty scored the loan goal for SuperStars FC. Monique earned the Player of the Game accolade. The Friday, June 2nd game saw the Gazelles FC playing to a 2-2 draw against the Youngsters FC. Krystie Webster scored both goals for the Gazelles who came back from a 2 goal deficit at half time due to earlier goals from Kevona Connor and Kennesha Xavier of the Youngsters FC.

The clubs will now take a two-week break and would return for the CCB sponsored Knockout Competition to battle for the Managing Director’s Trophy. The table below represents the final standings in the 2006 AFFL regular championship.
