A release from the Anguilla Football Association, reporting on the arrival of the team, Anguilla’s Rainbow Warriors, in Bad Neustadt, Germany, on May 29, boasted that they were accorded the pomp and circumstance reserved for the 2006 FIFA World Cup participating countries.
One German newspaper hailed the Anguilla team as “Stars for the moment and stars forever” and reported that “the Anguillians took over Berlin in minutes.”
“It only cost them a few minutes to stand in the middle of public interest,” the paper stated and “the most popular German television news aired a report about the soccer dolphins of the Caribbean.”
The newspaper report continued: “Not only journalists and politicians were delighted by the Anguillians. The whole city of Berlin started to love them. Crying and shouting teens, especially female ones, digital cameras everywhere and girls asking for pictures and autographs again and again. Anguillian soccer players in heaven….!
“No wonder that the players loved this atmosphere and one could believe all of them had grown a little bit [during] this long day full of jubilation and enthusiasm. But perhaps they were just gliding a little bit over the ground. And that’s ok. [It was] a great day for the stars of the moment which will [continue] to be stars in Anguilla for a long time.”
Anguilla’s Rainbow Warriors are witnessing and participating in several football matches in Germany. They will be returning home on June 17.
