Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mrs. Hodge said it was the American Eagle’s third year of sponsoring the Primary Schools’ Anguilla Day Quiz. “This event encourages our children to stay informed about current events,” she stated. “They need to know what is happening in Anguilla, the current changes and to remember their history. It is critical that our children take time out to read and we know reading is one of the most important elements of their school life.”

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Rodney Rey, gave an outline of the Anguilla Revolution and commented on those who were involved in the early leadership of the island and laid the foundation for progress and prosperity. “The future of Anguilla is in your hands, but how that future is shaped will depend on you, our young people, and students demonstrating wisdom, discipline, self-respect, respect for others and an appreciation of the present and knowledge of the past,” he said.
The quiz, held on May 25, covered the period of the Anguilla Revolution dating back to 1967 with the introduction of Associated Statehood and eventually touched on various matters of local general knowledge.
The venue was the Stoney Ground School auditorium. The opening ceremony was chaired by Principal of Valley Primary, Veda Harrigan. The Quiz Master was Charles Connor; the scorers were Hyacinth Hughes, Elvet Hughes and Darwin Hazel and the Time Keeper was Kenneth Hodge.
