Anguilla Golf Association Up-date


The annual meeting of the Anguillian Golf Association (AGA) was held at Roy’s Bayside Grill on Wednesday, February 15, 2006. Approximately 25 members were in attendance.

Dana Schmid, spokesperson for the Temenos Golf Club, was present for the meeting to describe the development of the 18-hole Greg Norman designed course soon to be completed on the west end. She predicted that the course would be open to the public in November.

Ms Schmid also reported that a schedule of greens fees would be established shortly. There was also discussion on the need for AGA and Temenos to work jointly in setting up golf programs for young people on the island.
Following the financial report, the following members were elected as directors of AGA for the coming year: Chester Walden, Peter Young, Fred Randall, Anne van Deventer, Tom Wright, Joseph Hayes and Steve Hopkins.

The next day, on February 16, the new directors met to elect officers and discuss plans for the coming year. Peter Young was elected President and, in accepting the position, commended Mr. Walden for his years of dedicated leadership.
Mr Walden was elected Vice President; Mr Randall re-elected as Treasurer and Mrs van Deventer re-elected Secretary. Peter Young thereupon appointed Mr Randall as Communications Officer; Mr Walden as chairman of Grounds and Equipment; Mr Wright as Chairman of Membership and Internal Communications; Mr Walden as Chairman of Grounds and Equipment; Mr Wright as Chairman of Tournaments and Social Events and Steve Hopkins as Publicity Chairman.

It was also announced that arrangements were made for the continued mowing and maintenance of the Pitch and Putt Course for the coming year.
There was discussion about the need to promote the game of golf in Anguilla, in conjunction with the Anguillian Sports Authority, the government and local businesses. Persons, young and old, are encouraged to become members of the Association and enjoy what the Pitch and Putt Course has to offer.

On Sunday, February, 2006 an 18-hole medal play tournament was held at the Pitch and Putt Course. Chester Walden was the winner, while John Lawrence and Tom Wright finished second and third respectively.

A nine-hole scramble match will be held at the course on Saturday, March 8, 2006. Persons interested in this event may contact either Peter Young 497 6387 or Tom Wright at 497 2658.

Group lessons, with a professional instructor, are usually available at the course each Friday at 11:00 a.m.
