Dr. Connor told The Anguillian that the group recognises achievements in the field of dental implants and there are certain examinations to be taken and qualifications obtained to get the fellowship. A candidate also makes case presentations for review by peers to ascertain the quality of his or her dental work.
The Anguillian Dentist graduated from Howard University School of Dentistry in Washington DC in the late 1980s as a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS). He then specialised for almost three years in the field of Othodonics involving the use of braces, mainly for the proper re-alignment of teeth.
“I then came back to the Caribbean to work, but the problem is that the region is such a small market that one can never be busy so I took on a new specialty,” he said. “I have dual specialties now: Othodonics and Oral Implantology. I still do comprehensive or general dentistry but those are the two areas that I focus on primarily and I think these specialties are a better benefit to this part of the world.” He explained that this was especially so in the case of Oral Implantology which largely involves the replacing of missing teeth in such a way that they are back in their original form.
Speaking more about his work, Dr. Connor said: “The treatment of othodonics allows you to move the teeth back in their original position. Implantology then allows you to come back where those spaces were and replace those teeth and that is the way I combine the two specialties. This is the better way to provide a service in this part of the world because it is needed. It is not a service that everybody can afford, but I am excited about it. In between I do regular conventional fillings and extractions, root canals and whatever needs to be done. I was trained to do it all, but my energy, emphasis and my hobby is what I do in Othodonics and Oral Implantology.”
Dr. Connor said he was hoping to take an examination for a second fellowship later this year. The institution he is associated with in this respect is the American Academy of Implant Dentistry.
Dr. Connor, son-in-law of Reverend and Mrs. John A. Gumbs, has a thriving inter-island dental service. He has a main office at Nisky Shopping Center in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands and a branch at Island Medical Center in St. Croix in the Sunni Island Shopping Center. In Tortola he is associated with the Government’s Dental Clinic and in Anguilla he has established the Centre for Dental and Facial Aesthetics, part of a business complex in the historic Upper Valley owned by him and his wife, Barrister-at-Law Josephine Gumbs-Connor.
He pilots his own light aircraft on his visits to the islands. “To do this service, you have to be mobile,” he laughed.
