FOOD & NUTRITION QUIZ: Anguillian Students Get Certificates

Four students at Campus A of the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School were among others from various islands who participated in the Annual Caribbean Food and Nutrition Quiz Competition. The event was conducted here on November 9 and 10 by the Nutrition and Health Promotion Unit, using the teleconference facilities of the University of the West Indies Distance Education Centre.

The participating Anguillian students were Rhana Richardson, Matthew Charles, Marisa Hodge and Rodi Richardson. The facilitator was Senior Health Educator, Civilla Kentish.

Certificates of participation were presented to the students by the Nutrition and Health Promotion Unit on behalf of the Health Authority of Anguilla. Coordinator of the Unit, Vernice Battick, said her office was proud of the students and the hard work they did in preparation for the competition.

The objectives of the competition were to improve the image of food and nutrition in the region; promote nutrition and healthy lifestyles among students in the community; and help students prepare for external examination in food and nutrition.

Mrs. Battick said Anguilla was able to participate in the competition with the assistance and perseverance of Home Economics Teacher Bernice Fahie-Richardson. The coach was Robertha Campbell, Dietetic Technician at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, whom Mrs. Battick said had worked hard preparing the students for the competition.

The students in Anguilla competed with their counterparts in twelve other islands. Mrs. Battick stated that they did very well during the preliminary round but did not go on to compete in the finals. “They should be commended, however, for participating in the competition despite the late start,” she went on. “We were aware of the great demand on their time. It had to be divided between preparing SBAs, attending regular classes, home work and preparing for the Food and Nutrition competition, giving up their Saturday afternoons to attend sessions.”

The final round of the competition was conducted face to face for the first time on November 29 in Jamaica. In first place was Jamaica; second, Trinidad and third, BVI.

Mrs. Battick said she looked forward to more students participating in the National and Regional Food and Nutrition Quiz Competition later this year.
