Bob’s Famous Crunchy Onion/Basil Croutons

We like to make use of our day old baguettes from the local bakery Le bon Pain.
These croutons are easy to make and taste great even by themselves.
You will find your guests eating these like salted nuts!

Ingredients:
  • Day old baguette (from Le bon Pain)
  • Two/three tablespoons dried onion flakes
  • One tablespoon dried basil flakes
  • Three tablespoons or so of Olive oil, Canola oil if desired
  • Seasoned salt

Slice small ends off baguette, cut baguette in half, slice off (carefully!) crusts on all four sides. Cut in half lengthwise, cut into 3/4-inch cubes.

Put onion flakes and basil flakes in bowl, add a tablespoon or two of water to dampen. Wait until all water is absorbed. Mix thoroughly. Add olive and canola oils, mix thoroughly. Add bread cubes slowly, mixing thoroughly to coat cubes on all sides with oil and onion and basil bits.

Place cubes on baking sheet, being sure they re coated on all sides. Put in 325 degree oven for about 25 minutes – turn after ten minutes, turn again in tenmore minutes. Make sure croutons are toasted light brown, but do not char.

Remove from oven, sprinkle with seasoned salt. Cover with paper towels until cooled, store in sealed plastic bag until needed. Put in salad after salad is tossed with Bob’s Famous vinaigrette dressing
