The Anguillian
Letter to the Editor
Dear Sir,
We refer to the 14th October 2005 issue of The Anguillian in which various articles were replete with references and discussions regarding the Labour Code Bill, the Planning Bill and the legal fraternity in Anguilla.
|
The main article that drew our attention, however, was the Press Release from “The Organisers of the Protest March” which was signed by “Anguillian Lawyers and Offended Citizens”. We do not know whether the term “Anguillian Lawyers” was meant to refer to all lawyers who are members of the Anguilla Bar or lawyers of Anguillian heritage. On either interpretation, however, we were not involved in the preparation of the Press Release and all of the views expressed therein are not necessarily the views of all “Anguillian Lawyers”. We also wish to say the following:
We all recognize that every developing country requires rules and regulations to govern it and therefore appreciate the attempts of the Government to put these rules and regulations in place in Anguilla so as to guide future development.
Having reviewed both Bills, however, and in particular the Planning Bill, we are of the view that the Bills ought to be revisited so as to make them acceptable to all of us who reside on this unique island. It is our duty as lawyers and Anguillians to assist in amending both Bills. This is the role we ought to be fulfilling.
We therefore call on all lawyers living and practicing in Anguilla as well as the general public to work together in a cooperative manner to ensure that these Bills protect our rights and interests and also meet the development needs of Anguilla.
Signed by
Other “Anguillian Lawyers”
