Child's Death Heightens Fears Of Ferocious Dogs

Fears of ferocious dogs in Anguilla reached a new dimension when a child was attacked and killed on August 4th at a home in the Forest.

The boy child, three-year-old Amoreé Nwokejiobi, was rushed to the Princess Alexandra Hospital by ambulance where he was found to have passed away. The child, who was at the time visiting his grandfather, Osmond Gumbs, was the son of Andrea Gumbs of the Valley and Amobi Nwokejiobi, formerly of Island Harbour, but residing for some time in the American State of Ohio. He was also the grandson of Adelthia Simmonds also of Island Harbour.

A police statement said it was believed that the child was attacked by one or more Rottwieler dogs in the grandfather’s yard. The police called the vet and the dogs were humanely destroyed and taken for forensic examination.

The police said they were continuing their investigations. The statement added that persons having knowledge of any previous occurrence involving the dogs should contact Detective Inspector Bernard Watson in confidence on telephone number 497 2609.

An autopsy was carried out on the body of the child on August 9th, at Reys Funeral Home. It is understood that the death was caused by massive loss of blood. The funeral will take place on Sunday, August 14, at the Mount Fortune Seventh-day Adventist Church.

In a separate incident some time ago, in October 2002, a young boy was attached and injured by a pit pull owned by a different person, and was treated at the hospital.
There is legislation in Anguilla for the control of ferocious dogs on the island. The Dogs Act, 2001, provides for the licensing, keeping and controlling of dogs. It prohibits persons from importing a dog of a type known as the pit bull terrier or other ferocious dogs and imposes restrictions in respect of such dogs including breeding.
