Jerry Mopstick Cycling Club Holds Annual Race

The Jerry Mop Stick Cycling Club held its Second Annual New Year’s races for children and grown-ups at Sandy Ground on Monday, January 3. Phillip Richardson, otherwise known as “Chinee”, who is one of the main organisers of the event, said the aim was to promote cycling on the island and to bring back the New Year’s races which took place in the 1960s and 70s.

“I was too young then. I started bicycle racing in 1979 and it is a passion that runs in the family,” he said. “Jerry, my brother, was one of the leading cyclists back in the 60s and the 70s. When he retired he asked me to take over and so I have the same passion until I pass it on to someone else.”

“Chinee” was the Junior Champion in Anguilla for some time. He later competed in Antigua during the independence celebrations there in 1992 and when the event was held in 1994 he emerged winner. He also competed in St. Maarten and in Marie Gallante, off the coast of Guadeloupe. Since then he has been a competitor in the John T Memorial Cycling Race, clocking at 60 kilometers.

“We want to thank Cable & Wireless our sponsor this year, through Sutcliffe Hodge and the staff there, for readily supporting us,” he added. “We have been given money to buy trophies and for cash prizes for the seniors.”
