Three Schools Top In C & W Spelling B |

Three of the eight primary schools in Anguilla secured the top positions in the Cable & Wireless-sponsored 16th Annual Spelling B Competition.

The keenly-contested event was held at the Stoney Ground School Auditorium and was attended by a capacity crowd of students and supporting parents.

Valley Primary represented by Mikeela Skellekie and Meesha Richardson took first place with a score of 39 points. Second was Stoney Ground School, with 36 points, represented by Senegal Carty and Kahdijah Muhamad. Central Christian School which entered the competition for the first time placed third having scored 33 points. Its representatives were Lavida Brooks and Megan Coburn.
Best spellers were Senegal Carty with 22 points; Mikeela Skellekie 21; Tamara Esddale also 21; and Michelle Romney with 20 points.
The winning school was presented with a voucher for US$1000; second place received US$750 and third US$500.
The other participating schools were Road Primary with 29 points; Island Harbour Primary 27; Teacher Gloria Omolulu Institute 26; Maurice Vanterpool 25; and the Alwyn Allison Primary School at West End 19 points. Each of these schools received a consolation prize of a gift voucher of US$100.
Individual prizes for the students included palm pilots, and various board games, t-shirts, pre-paid phone cards, pens and other items.

Speaking at the brief opening ceremony, Chief Executive of Cable & Wireless, Sutcliffe Hodge, said the company would continue its sponsorship of the annual Spelling B Competition with much pleasure.
