The Easter Monday holiday in Anguilla was marked by various social events held by church and community groups in several parts of the island.

The largest event was the boat race at Meads Bay in which ten boats, some of them recently re-conditioned, participated. It attracted the usual enthusiastic crowd from throughout the island as well as visitors, a number if them coming from St. Martin/St. Maarten for the day.
Many took refuge under tents, umbrellas and trees from the hot afternoon sun, while they awaited the return of the sleek racing boats.
In first place was Blue Bird. De Tree placed second; UFO third; N W O fourth; and Eagle fifth.
The Carib Beer-sponsored race was the first of a series of boat races on the island. Other races will continue over the coming weeks leading up to the Anguilla Yacht Regatta, early next month, and the August week races.
Another organised event for the holiday was the St. Mary’s Anglican Church Easter Monday Fair which, apart from the entertainment, is usually a fund-raising function.
The activities included a cricket match between a Bishop’s Eleven representing the Anglican Church and a Superintendent’s Eleven which represented the Methodist Church. At the end of the match the scores were 56 and 39, the Anglicans making certain that nobody beats them on their own turf just outside the church.

A friendly ladies match in progress

A friendly ladies’ match followed. Reverend Lindsay Richardson and Eustace Brooks served as umpires.
Not far from the cricket area, children enjoyed themselves in a variety of activities and many persons congregated at the fund-raising barbecue grills.
Other church and community groups found much pleasure at beach outings and other forms of light entertainment and relaxation.
