Past President Courtney Devonish told students that 2005 is the 100th Anniversary of Rotary International and by then the local club hopes to fill all the shelves of the library. He reported that funds for the computers came from a boat race that raised some $5000.00 and the recent car raffle supplied funds for the books. Donations of books from Fred and Marva Thompson, Sarah and Donna Peacock and a Rotarian from the USA who was visiting, have all added to the library. Assistance in obtaining the books and shipping them came from the Newark Rotary Club and the Elkton Rotary Club in the USA.
The aim of the Rotary Club is to have all the books on the syllabus available in the library so that students without their own books can use a copy there. Devonish told the students that he is also hoping to get a television with a large screen for viewing films. Other plans of the Rotarians are to form a Chess Club, and a Rotarian will teach interested pupils how to play, six chess sets will be bought. Annual competitions will be held later on.
Principal Darwin Hazell thanked the Rotary Club on behalf of the staff and students and urged the students to make full use of the library to complement work in the classroom. Deputy Principal, Anne Edwards added her thanks to the Rotarians saying that it was a proud moment for the school when the Rotary Club offered to assist the library. Acting Permanent Secretary for Education, Verna Fahie, told the students that in the primary school they learnt how to read but now they must read to learn.
Courtney Devonish is appealing to all parents and students to donate all books that they are not using to the library, so that other students can benefit.
