Drunk Or Careless Drivers?

The Editor,
The Anguillian

Dear Editor:

DRUNK OR CARELESS DRIVERS?

I have been a resident in Anguilla for the past couple of years and have witnessed with much interest the rapid growth in the number of vehicles on the island. I am not being funny when I say that the vehicles now here outnumber the 1967 population which was then said to be 6,000 souls.

What worries me is the driving ‘style’ of many of our motorists. It is crazy and dangerous I am afraid – one ‘hella’ of rush going nowhere in some cases when you think of it. The island’s improved roads are being used as race tracks and the ‘rocket drivers’ show little or no concern or manners for other road users.

I am sure that quite a number of persons drive ‘under the influence’. A case in point is the damage repeatedly being done to the steel frames in the little pedestrian walkways at the Valley Roundabout. How on earth can a vehicle driver collide with these frames unless he is either downright careless or drunk?
I know the Traffic Police and the Court are doing their best to control this crazy driving on our roads and I hope that all motorists would drive with due care, attention and good manners for their own safety and that of others.
