Traditional Boats On Stamps |
| Publishing date: 05.06.2003 10:44 |
The younger generation in Anguilla will be given an opportunity to learn more about the traditional sea-faring life of the island when a new definitive issue of postage stamps is released on June 10.
|
A statement from the General Post Office said twelve wooden schooners which operated a cargo service between Anguilla and other neighbouring islands will be featured on the stamps.
These boats, which are no longer in existence, are Ismay, Betsy R, Warspite, Liberator, Spitfire, Rose Millicent, Finance, Sunbeam R, Tiny Gull, New London, Excelsior and Lady Laurel.
The commemorative stamps, which will be in circulation for five years, range in value from EC$0.15 to $10.00. First Day Covers will be available at EC$30.85 and souvenir sets at $24.85. Prints of the vessels will be sold at US$10.00.
Postmaster General, Lelia Richardson, has expressed thanks to Sir Emile Gumbs for his assistance in researching the boats and to family members who provided photographs and other information with respect to the boats.
This is the third definitive issue of Anguillian postage stamps in recent years. The issue from 1990 to 1995 featured fish of Anguilla and the 1995 to 2000 issue depicted fruits of Anguilla.
