You Can Hold Both Passports

The Governor’s Office says it has received reports of a public meeting held on Wednesday, May 21 which suggest that there is still some confusion about the holding of British and British Overseas Territory passports.

The statement noted that on 7 September 2001, the Governor’s Office issued the following press release:

“Nobody who is a British Dependent Territories Citizen will be asked to give up that status of the passport that they currently hold. But the will be allowed to take up a British Citizen’s passport if they wish. This will be up to the individual, not the Government. If they wish, they can hold both passports, or they can choose only one yet still retain the option of taking up the other later if they want.”

The Governor’s Office has expressed the hope that this statement would clarify the position. Persons requiring further assistance are advised to contact the Passport Office or the Governor’s Staff Officer who will be happy to advise.
