FLEMING PRESENTS CHILDREN'S BOOKS

The remedial reading programme now being carried out at the six Government primary schools in Anguilla, has been strengthened by the presentation of a number of much-needed children’s books. The reading materials were jointly funded by Michael Fleming (who undertook the project) and the Long Bay Lutheran Church whose congregation largely comprises visitors from the United States.

Rhonda Connor, Education Officer responsible for Multi-Professional Support Services, said the books were ordered for the children to take home and use as library books. “We know very well that just as a driver learns to drive by driving, children learn to read by reading and they must have access to material for them to do so,” she observed.

She expressed thanks to Mr. Fleming on behalf of the Education Department, the Ministry, teachers and the children in particular who will benefit most from the books. She also thanked the donors of the Lutheran Church who saw the book project as something to which they were willing to contribute as part of their benevolent work in the community.

The six sets of books were received by Ornette Edwards, one of the remedial reading teachers. In making the presentation, Fleming said he realised that Government was not in a position to meet all the needs of the schools and he had therefore undertaken to provide some assistance to the remedial reading programme.

“I thought I could do my part and I know that there are other people in Anguilla who would also like to help, so I decided to undertake the book project for our children,” he said. He was happy that the Lutheran Church had readily agreed to help fund the books and invited other persons on the island to join in providing financial assistance as more books were needed.

The books he presented are of varying reading levels as depicted by the white, pink and red colours. Those now needed are in the colours of green, blue, yellow and orange. Persons wishing to make contributions towards the remedial reading book project may contact Mr. Fleming by telephoning 235-7155 or Rhonda Connor at the Teachers’ Resource Library.
