SANDY GROUND PLAYING FIELD FENCED

The Sandy Ground playing field has now been fenced, a big step towards the improvement of the area. The project was sponsored by Island Community Development Limited, a group of local persons committed to providing more recreational facilities in Anguilla.

The cost of the fencing, amounting to some EC$50,000, was met from funds collected largely by donations. The work was carried out by Marvin, Claudius and Lester Connor and Mervin Carty of Stoney Ground. It was supervised by the Director of Sports, Alkins Rogers.
President of Island Community Development Limited, Michael Fleming, who is also one of the principal fund-raisers along with Mitchell Lake, said the next step was the provision of toilet facilities and other services. “We have some money and are hoping to raise the rest. We can at least do with another forty thousand US dollars to help,” Fleming said.
The playing field, about four acres, is intended to accommodate a full range of sporting activities and will be available to all persons across the island. Keys will be kept at the Sports Directorate and at Sandy Ground. The fencing is a means of protecting the facilities that will be put on the playing field for the general use of the various sporting groups.
The Committee responsible for the playing field has expressed gratitude to Alphaeus Mussington and family of Sandy Ground for storing the fencing materials. The Committee comprises Michael Fleming, President; Blondell Rogiers, Vice President; Millie Hodge, Secretary; Calvin Hughes, Treasurer; Brent Davis and Mitchell Lake, Public Relations Officers.
