CONSTITUTIONAL REFORM: CALYPSO SHOW ON ANGUILLA DAY |
The Constitutional and Electoral Reform Committee in conjunction with the Calypso Committee will be staging a Calypso Show on the issue of Constitutional and Electoral Reform on or about Anguilla Day 2003.
The purpose of the show is to raise awareness and discussion on the important issue of constitutional and electoral reform via the medium of calypso. Topics will be wide and free ranging but will all be related to the core issues of the constitution and the electoral laws.
The Calypsonians will sing on issues like Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, the role and composition of the Executive, the role and composition of the House of Assembly, Anguilla’s present and future status, who is or should be a Belonger and other issues which affect governance in society now and in the future. According to Mr. Jerry Richardson (Dice) of the Calypso Committee, the Calypsonians are expressing keen interest in the show and with the standard and quality of Calypso so much on the rise in the recent past, he expects that the Calypsonians will bring their skills to bear on this important national issue and produce a show which will not only be entertaining but which should be very informative.
Mr. David Carty speaking on behalf of the CERC expressed his appreciation to the Calypsonians and show organizers for their willingness to participate and produce the show. He said that as far as he was aware that was the first time that the promoting of constitutional issues had ever been done so specifically via the medium of calypso and he looked forward to hearing the Calypsonians bring their lyrics and rhythm to bear on the subject. He said that the Committee needed to hear what the views and thoughts of all Anguillians were on the issues and he hoped that the popular appeal of Calypso would go a long way towards provoking thought and discussion on the matter.
