Investigations In Burnt Vehicles Continuing

Police in Anguilla are continuing their investigations into the circumstances surrounding the destruction of ten vehicles at Island Car Rental compound at the Cannonball building. The incident occurred on the night of Thursday January 23. The origin of the fire has not been established but it is understood that arson is suspected.

The ten completely-destroyed vehicles included six Mitsubishi seven-seat wagons. In addition several other vehicles including two Vitaras and two Feroza jeeps were damaged by the fire. The loss is estimated to be in the area of US$175,000-200,000. The vehicles were parked at the rear of the Cannonball building. The area is fenced and can be closed off at the main gate, but is accessible by a footpath at the front of the building and up some steps.

Further loss at the compound was prevented by the quick action of the owners and a number of friends who were able to save some of the vehicles. The fire was eventually put out by the Airport Fire Services and a number of police officers. Hamlet Harrigan, who manages the car rental company, expressed thanks and appreciation to the airport and police fire-fighting crew and others for their prompt assistance.

The family-owned business, located near Wallblake Airport, is one of the largest car rentals in Anguilla serving the tourist industry as well as the general public for many years.
