BUSINESS BASKETBALL LEAGUE ENDS - DLG Wins Championship
|
After two months of play the Annual Summer Business Basketball League, sponsored by the National Bank of Anguilla (NBA) and Digicel, ended at the Coronation Ball Field on Tuesday evening, this week. The closing ceremony, chaired by NBA’s Secretary, Linda Fleming, included the presentation of trophies by NBA staff members Deslyn Smith and Jinelle Benn and an All Star game involving players from all ten teams.

The participating teams in the Basketball League represented Cap Juluca, Sunset Homes, Caribbean Commercial Bank, Old Skool, Border Protection, Police, National Bank of Anguilla, Gumbs’ Delivery, DLG and Fire.
The deserving champions were DLG Engineering. Second was Border Protection which previously won the knockout match at the commencement of the tournament, and in third place were the National Bank of Anguilla Bowlers. The Most Valuable Player was Macwhirr Lewis.

Director of NBA, Ralph Hodge, said that basketball, like any other sport, was a means of developing the youthful energies of the players and earning them a career if they were very lucky. “One of the nice things about the Basketball League is that it was incident-free and we congratulate every player and spectator,” he told the teams. “We at the National Bank believe that getting involved in sports can certainly make a difference and we want to see your youthful energies taken to the next level.” He pledged that NBA would not only continue to sponsor the basketball league, but also provide assistance for all other sporting activities in Anguilla and the development of the island’s youth.

Speaking on behalf of Digicel, Colwayne Pickering said that apart from its involvement in the economic stability aspects of the island Digicel, as a corporate citizen, was also committed to the social development of Anguilla. He too was pleased that there were no disruptions of the tournament by acts of violence.
Fabrice Stevens, President of the Basketball League, welcomed all other businesses or teams desirous of participating in the competition next year. He noted that in addition to the current ten teams, five others had expressed interest in participating. “This year was very exciting and congratulations to the winning teams,” he added. “Next year we want to see more teams and a greater involvement of the youth.”

Webster, the coach, for doing a great job in preparing the team for the League.
Webster was happy that many youngsters had participated in the League and noted that there were a number of educational benefits to be derived from playing basketball. He took much pleasure in recalling that he and other lovers of the sport had been involved in the building of the basketball court which was now very much in use.
