Waterfront Facility For Island Harbour

A Waterfront facility providing boutiques for tourists, other public services and greater parking space for motorists is being proposed for Island Harbour Bay, one of the island’s attractive east coast beaches. Elected Representative for the constituency, Kenneth Harrigan, made the disclosure on Tuesday January 21 to The Anguillian.

Standing among a heap of boulders recently transported to a rock-bound strip of land in preparation for the work, Mr. Harrigan said: “We want to build a waterfront here. We will have some shops for tourists, parking space and other services. We are beginning this project as a self-help undertaking for now and later on the Government will get involved. In addition to the need for parking space, we will be putting in the tourist shops because I believe that Scrub Island will be developed and Scilly Cay is developing. The Government has given us the green light and is working with us; but as you know funds are not too good now because we are going to embark on the big project of developing Wallblake Airport and the roads programme. In the meantime we are doing what we can in Island Harbour.”

He said the work was being initiated by him and Carl Smith, a construction manager, commonly referred to as “the Mayor of Island Harbour.” They will be heading a working committee comprising members of the community.

“These stones will be pushed into the sea and eventually this waterfront will be extended another 75-80 feet into the water so the stones will automatically fill the area,” Mr. Harrigan added when questioned further about the proposed development. He estimated that it will take a year to complete with an approximate cost of two million US dollars.
Mr. Smith, his business partner, said the waterfront area for development was about 400 feet extending from the jetty to Greta Hodge’s small restaurant just below the Island Harbour Preschool building. He acknowledged the contribution of a quantity of boulders from a number of persons (transported to the area by trucks owned by Cynric Webster, Kenneth and Wilkin Harrigan) and noted the promises made by Albert Lake and others.

“We are hoping that persons in the Island Harbour community with backhoes and other equipment will come along to help while we wait on Government to assist. This will mean a big development in the area and I feel happy that something has started.”
