The island is 16 miles long, 3 miles wide, 35 square miles. Made up of coral rock, the terrain is flat with a high cliff wall extending along the northern coast and tapering down to the south. Some of the coral has broken down and created a rich red soil in valley areas around the island commonly called bottoms. In these bottoms it is possible to grow limited crops. In many areas the rain water is trapped creating salt ponds.
The Valley is the capital of Anguilla and centre of commerce. The government buildings, post office and all banks are located here. The Valley also has the highest concentration of the local population.
