In Memory Of Orlando Johnson: First Annual Football Tournament

A large number of young men from the Valley, one of the largest populated areas of Anguilla, have come together in a show of unity and peace to share in an Annual Football Tournament in memory of Orlando Johnson of North Side, who was a noted sportsman.

The First Orlando Johnson Memorial Football Tournament commenced at Coronation Park on Sunday afternoon, September 7, with four teams representing the Valley Community participating. They are Lower Valley, South Valley, North Valley and North Side.

The tournament began with a colourful parade, by the teams, from the main road in front of Ashley & Sons Supermarket to the nearby Coronation Park where there was an opening ceremony chaired by Ijahnya Christian. Those in attendance included the Hon. Victor Banks, Elected Representative for Valley South (and Minister of Finance); the Hon. Evans Rogers, Elected Representative for Valley North (and Minister of Social Development); the Hon. David Carty, Speaker of the Anguilla House of Assembly; representatives of the Department of Youth and Culture and a cross-section of the Valley Community including Kharel Carty, mother of the late Orlando Johnson.

The Lower Valley Team

Mr. Rogers congratulated the Valley youth for their show of unity and their desire to promote peace and cooperation. He hoped that other youngsters in various parts of the island would follow a similar course for the common good of the island. Other speakers were Valarie Hodge, Sharon Heyliger and Tarvis Carty, all of whom spoke highly ofthe tournament and stressed the need for cooperation, unity and good sportsmanship among the teams.
During the opening ceremony presentations were made to Kharel Carty in memory of her son, Orlando, and to Karima Connor and Mary Carty, family members of the late Sigmund Carty, another keen sportsman of the Valley.
The first two matches were Lower Valley vs South Valley and North Side vs North Valley.

The upcoming matches will be September 14: North Valley vs South Valley and North Valley vs Lower Valley; and September 21: Lower Valley vs North Side; and North Valley vs South Valley.
The members of the Organising Committee are Shanicia Richardson, Khalid Brooks, Khaoni Richardson and Sherlon Richardson.

The Valley Community Club has recorded its thanks to all those who contributed to the tournament so far. They include the Department of Youth and Culture, under the leadership of Joash Proctor, and Hyacinth Augustine, Programme Officer, for sponsorship in cash, trophies and equipment; the Football Association for providing the balls and for preparing the field for the event; the Omega Car Wash for sponsorship of the plaque for Orlando’s mother; Jim’s Tile for contributing the referee gear and J.B. Events and Production for sponsoring the South Valley Team.
