CARIWA Holds Dinnr And Awards Event


On Saturday April 26 the Caribbean Women’s Association ended its conference held here with a dinner and awards ceremony at LA Café. Several awards were presented to Anguillians and members from the region. The dinner was held under the distinguished patronage of Chief Minister Osbourne Fleming and Ruby Fleming who is the patron of the Anguilla National Council of Women.

The Chief Minister welcomed those present, with special greetings to the overseas delegates who he invited to return to enjoy the island more. He assured members that his government is following through on CEDAW (the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women) and it will probably be passed during this year.

The keynote speaker was Kim Slicklein, CEO of Enclave Rising, whose company is committed to conservation of the environment. She spoke of the preservation of the family and the paramount importance of women, in the family, who have the voice within their homes and can be role models for their children. She said that women must make time for their families and spend quality time with their children to instill values in them. She praised the CARIWA women who have run the association for the past 38 years and suggested that whatever passion or dream that they have, they must be committed to it and must be a beacon and lead others.

Awards were presented, by Ruby Fleming assisted by Carmencita Davis, to women in the Caribbean who have made a difference to the women in their community. Receiving awards were Ruth Antoine of Trinidad & Tobago, Eulalie Myers of St Maarten, Neva Edwards of Dominica, Vivian Sealy of Barbados, and from Anguilla, Rowena Carty, Isa Lake, Lana Hoyoung and Viola Connor. A special appreciation award was presented to Ruby Fleming and to Maurice Connor, Victor Banks and Osbourne Fleming.

The new CARIWA Board to serve from 2008-2010 was installed. It comprises Hyacinth Thomas, President, from Dominica, Elaine Henry-McQueen, Deputy President of Grenada, Lana Hoyoung, Secretary, Angelica Pierre-Louis of Dominica as Treasurer and Esther Blue from Barbados as Public Relations Officer.

Chairing the event were Ernie Hodge-Carty, President of the Anguilla National Council of Women, Oluwakemi Linda Banks and Lana Hoyoung who introduced the keynote speaker.
